Amid the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the Department of Works and Highways (DPWH) Ilocos Sur Second District Engineering Office resumed the construction of the sports complex and convention center located along By-Pass road at barangay Bagani Campo, Candon City.
The Cuneta Astrodome-inspired sports complex sits on a three hectare land area with the building footprint of almost one hectare and the rest are allotted for parking and road network.
The special feature of the Sports Complex is that it will have a layered dome-style roofing system, which is one of a kind in the Philippines.
The basement level will serve as the parking area, stock room, mechanical and electrical room, maintenance room, and will also have a fire escape stairs and a room for toilets for both genders.
The first floor will have a lobby and lounge area, patio/veranda, reception, administration office, Multipurpose court and Stage, and the Orchestra area on both sides.
It will also have a dugout at the center, and nine rentable spaces, and two dressing rooms located at the backstage of the Orchestra area.
The second floor will provide a space for another lobby, seating area, two restaurant areas, two common dining areas, four snack stands, control room (for light and sound), toilets for both genders, and a roof deck.
And the third floor will also have a lobby, two snack stands, seating area, and roof decks.
The Sports complex and convention center aims to motivate the younger generation to excel in sports and music and also invite investment in the city to increase its revenue.
The 5,000 capacity seat coliseum is also expected to host major sports events like out of town Philippine Basketball Association games, professional and amateur volleyball games, concerts, government and private companies’ events.
